#IAmRemarkable X BCCJ
My 17th #IAmRemarkable Workshop but only my 2nd onsite was held with 12 BCCJ members in Tokyo this month.
“Going forward, I will share my achievements proudly. Something I wasn’t too sure about before.”
Having now delivered the content to over 150 people, in each session, I get different takeaways. For this session what stood out for me as a facilitator, based on the unique blend of participants, was the following 3 points:
1. That the self acknowledgement and self acceptance that is the foundation of self-promotion is incredibly important. The Inner critic's ability to judge and belittle should not be underestimated as a barrier to authentic self promotion.
2. Listening to the achievements of others can be very inspiring and a huge connector of people. However, we need to intentionally create those spaces and invite everyone to recognise their contribution or jealousy and competition bias can creep in.
3. We talked a lot about cultural stereotypes about self-promotion. 2 things to consider. This programme was born in the US so maybe we need to check our own stereotype about who finds self promotion easy! Secondly, in collectivist cultures, one reframe on self-promotion is to focus on how it is an act of service. "By sharing this, how can I inspire someone? Or how can knowing that I am capable of this type of thing help my organisation to innovate?"
“Thank you. It changed my perspective on self-promotion”
About #IAmRemarkable
#IAmRemarkable is a global movement, reaching 550,000+ participants and fuelled by over 3,000 facilitators across 180 countries. We exist to empower everyone, including underrepresented groups, to celebrate their achievements in the workplace and beyond, while challenging the social perception around self-promotion. At the heart of our movement is a 90 minute workshop open to everyone, hosted by global facilitators. #IAmRemarkable, created at Google in 2016 under the leadership of Anna Vainer, has evolved into a program currently overseen by Rmrkblty, a non-profit organization founded by Anna Vainer.
