Atelier Shinkai Serves as “着地場所 /Arrival Point” for Art Project 着地? (Has something like an artwork arrived?)
As part of the Sumida Art Festival (Sumida Gosai no Geijutsusai), Atelier Shinkai in Kyojima served as one of five artist-run hubs acting as a "landing zone" for "Chakuchi?" (着地？ / Has something like an artwork arrived? a site-specific public exhibition conceptualized and organized by artist duo Fumiharu Sato and Hiroko Haraguchi.
The experimental project redefines fine art delivery by utilizing standard courier drop-off (okihai) logistics to place artwork directly at neighborhood doorsteps. Atelier Shinkai served as the 着地場所 /Arrival Point for artist Kana Ago (based in Kyoto), whose piece arrived as a doorstep package, establishing an immediate interface between public space, domestic threshold, and contemporary art. During an unusually rainy September, two neighborhood residents messaged Ame directly with photos attached asking again “Is it alright for it to be out in the rain?” —a moment demonstrating the deep-rooted care and watchfulness characteristic of the Kyojima community that I love so much
Navigating Public Art Etiquette: The outdoor placement prompted spontaneous questions from curious visitors navigating public art etiquette: Is it okay to touch this? Am I allowed to take photos? Is this art or a package? - one guy even tried to come inside the Atelier while the door was locked and the closed sign was on the door! I have to admit that this aspect made me a little uncomfortable and reminds me that with public art we need to have the balance between the work and the life and privacy and freedom of residents.

About Atelier Shinkai
Founded and run by textile artist Jennifer Shinkai, Atelier Shinkai is an artist studio and creative community hub located in Kyojima, Sumida Ward, Tokyo. The space hosts open studios, workshops, and international cultural events, bridging local neighborhood life with contemporary artistic practice.

About the Organizers & Featured Artist
Organizers: Fumiharu Sato and Hiroko Haraguchi (佐藤史治と原口寛子) are an artist duo formed in 2011, working with site-specific installations, video, and social structures.
Hosted Artist: Kana Ago (吾郷佳奈) is a Kyoto-based visual artist known for works utilizing reflective surfaces and pigments that respond directly to their surrounding environment.
