Artist Jennifer Shinkai Joins Sumida Gosai 2026 to Host Memory & Textile Workshop すまだ五彩「創造力の学校」：新開ジェニファーが布と物語を紡ぐワークショップを開催
Executive coach, facilitator, and textile artist Jennifer Shinkai has been announced as a featured local artist in the Sumida Creative School Project 2026 (すまだ創造力の学校プロジェクト 2026), held under the auspices of the Sumida Gosai Art Festival (すまだ五彩の芸術祭).
As a self-taught artist whose practice emerged during the pandemic when staying safe at home created space to reimagine everyday life, Shinkai considers it a profound honor to be officially recognized among the artists actively creating in Sumida City.
On Saturday, November 21, 2026 (14:00–16:00 JST) at the Sumida City Social Welfare Hall (墨田区社会福祉会館), Shinkai will lead an interactive textile and storytelling workshop titled:
“Unraveling Memories, Knitting Connections: Knitting Memories from Clothes We No Longer Wear” (思い出をほどいて、編んでみよう！ー着なくなった服からはじまる、記憶の編みものー).
The session invites participants of all ages to bring in a piece of clothing they no longer wear, but cannot bring themselves to throw away—whether a beloved outfit, outgrown children’s clothes, or a keepsake from someone dear. Working together with scissors, a repurposed Shoji door from a local Akiya, and gentle reflection, participants will unravel, cut, and weave these garments into a new collective tapestry while sharing the stories and emotions embedded within.
“For me, textiles are tangible carriers of human memory and emotion. Emerging as an artist during the Covid years, I found deep connection through tactile creation. In this workshop, we will explore the memory held within fabrics and how the simple act of cutting and re-weaving can turn personal stories into collective community dialogue.”
Throughout the festival period, an archival exhibition showcasing works by participating local artists—including Shinkai's textile piece “Yurumu/ Release” (継む / release) and “何事も中途半端な生き方をしてきたと思う中で、唯一真剣にやり通したという思いがあるもの。 I feel like I've been living my life half-heartedly, but this is the only time I feel like I've done everything in earnest”—will be open for free viewing at the Sumida City Social Welfare Hall.

新開ジェニファー、「すまだ創造力の学校プロジェクト 2026」にてテキスタイルワークショップを開催：布に宿る記憶と対話を紡ぎ直す体験
【東京】 エグゼクティブコーチ、ファシリテーター、そしてテキスタイルアーティストとして活動する新開ジェニファー（Jennifer Shinkai）が、「すまだ五彩の芸術祭」の一環として開催される「すまだ創造力の学校プロジェクト 2026」の参加アーティストとして選出されました。
独学でアートを学び、コロナ禍における「おうち時間」という日常の大きな変化をきっかけに創作活動を本格化させた新開にとって、自らが暮らし活動する墨田区のアーティストとして認めていただいたことは、大変名誉な節目となります。
2026年11月21日（土）14:00〜16:00、墨田区社会福祉会館にて、以下の参加型ワークショップを実施いたします。
美術プログラム：『思い出をほどいて、編んでみよう！ー着なくなった服からはじまる、記憶の編みものー』
本ワークショップでは、「もう着なくなったけれど、なぜか手放せない」「誰かからもらった大切な思い出がある」そんな衣類をご持参いただきます。テキスタイル作家である新開とともに、衣服をほどいたり、切ったり、編み直したりしながら、新しいかたちへと生まれ変わらせていきます。手作業のリズムの中で、その布地に刻まれた記憶やエピソードを参加者同士で語り合い、人と人との豊かな時間をじっくりと編み上げる体験です。
“私にとって布やテキスタイルは、記憶や物語をそっと包み込む特別な存在です。コロナ禍のステイホーム期間を機に表現を始めた私にとって、アートは人とのつながりを取り戻す手段でした。参加者の皆さんが持ち寄る布にどんな物語が眠っているのか、そしてそれをほどき編み直すことでどんな対話が生まれるのか、今からとても楽しみにしています。”
また、会期中は墨田区社会福祉会館にて、新開の展示作品『継む / release』と『何事も中途半端な生き方をしてきたと思う中で、唯一真剣にやり通したという思いがあるもの。 I feel like I've been living my life half-heartedly, but this is the only time I feel like I've done everything in earnest』をはじめとする地域ゆかりの作家による作品展示・アーカイブ展示も常時ご覧いただけます（プログラムがない日も入場無料）。
