Artist profile

Paula Borel is a Tokyo-based artist and bookbinder whose work is a tribute to the 'textures of the everyday.' Operating under the studio name atelier_pbg, she specializes in linocut prints inspired by Tokyo’s urban infrastructure and folk icons. Committed to the philosophy of mottainai, she breathes new life into salvaged materials—using vintage kimono fabrics and antique book pages as the foundation for her contemporary prints. Her art serves as a bridge between Japan’s storied past and its modern, electric pulse.

The journey:  Before uncovering her creative practice, Paula trained and worked in the fields of veterinary medicine, biology and clinical research.The transition into expat life completely shifted her trajectory, unleashing a hidden artistic side that reshaped her worldview.

コンセプト (The Philosophy)

パウラは、東京を拠点に活動するアーティスト兼製本家であり、その作品は「日常のテクスチャー（質感）」へのオマージュとなっています。「atelier_pbg」というスタジオ名で活動する彼女は、東京の都市インフラや郷土玩具（フォークアイコン）にインスピレーションを得たリノカット版画を専門としています。「もったいない」の精神を大切にしながら、ヴィンテージの着物生地や古書のページなどの廃材に新しい命を吹き込み、現代的な版画のベースとして再利用しています。彼女のアートは、日本の伝統的な過去と、現代的でエネルギッシュな躍動感をつなぐ架け橋となっています。

歩み (The Journey)

アート活動を始める前、パウラは獣医学、生物学、そして臨床研究の分野で研鑽を積み、キャリアを築いてきました。しかし、海外移住（エクスパット生活）への移行が彼女の人生の軌跡を大きく変え、それまで眠っていた独学の芸術的才能を開花させ、世界観を一変させるきっかけとなりました。現在、彼女はかつて培った科学的な規律、鋭い観察眼、そして細部へのこだわりを、版画や手製本という触覚的で緻密な世界へと注ぎ込んでいます。
