Artist Statement – Jennifer Shinkai

Jennifer Shinkai is a British-born, Tokyo-based artist whose work weaves together themes of art, sports, and sustainability. As a passionate runner, she collects race and sporting event T-shirts—not just as memorabilia, but as materials rich with personal stories, aspirations, and emotional significance. These polyester shirts are often kept for sentimental reasons, yet are environmentally persistent and difficult to dispose of. Shinkai reclaims this vibrant material, transforming it into textile works that honour their history while giving them renewed purpose.

Her work invites viewers to feel the kinetic energy of past wearers through bold colour and tactile composition, and to reflect on the environmental and emotional legacy of the things we keep. Shinkai has previously exhibited her textile art and community-based projects at Sumida Mukojima Expo 2023 (#100tshirts100stories) and Sumida Mukojima Expo 2024 (あじさいレポート).

作家ステートメント – 新開ジェニファー

新開ジェニファーは、イギリス出身で東京在住のアーティストです。彼女の作品は、「アート」「スポーツ」「サステナビリティ」の交差点に位置しています。熱心なランナーでもある彼女は、マラソンやスポーツイベントのTシャツを、単なる記念品ではなく、持ち主の思いやストーリーが込められた素材として集めています。ポリエステル製であるこれらのTシャツは、環境中に長く残り処分も難しい一方で、感情的な価値から手放せない存在でもあります。

新開は、こうしたTシャツに再び命を吹き込み、過去の持ち主が纏っていたエネルギーや鮮やかな色彩を、布作品として可視化します。その作品は、私たちが「手放せないモノ」に込める感情と、それが環境にもたらす影響について問いかけるものです。

これまでに、テキスタイル作品および地域参加型プロジェクトを、すみだ向島EXPO 2023（#100tshirts100stories）およびすみだ向島EXPO 2024（あじさいレポート）にて発表しています。
